  2. the classical tragedy in French drama. His
  3. subjects came from Greek mythology and he
  4. observed the rules of classical Greek drama.
  5. Most of his tragedies have women in the title
  6. role, for example Andromaque 1667, Iphigenie
  7. 1674, and Phedre 1677. After the contemporary
  8. failure of Phedre he no longer wrote for the
  9. secular stage, but influenced by Madame de
  10. Maintenon wrote two religious dramas, Esther
  11. 1689 and Athalie 1691, which achieved
  12. posthumous success.
